Sun Microsystems plots strategy to build advanced Internet services using Java
Article Abstract:
Sun Microsystems is planning to build advanced Internet services using Java. The new plan, called Sun Open Net Environment, will be competing with Microsoft's plan for similar Internet services tailored for the individual user. These services will encompass already existing e-mail and and calendar functions and Sun hopes to add other applications like word processing and spreadsheets.

The main contenders; in one corner, Microsoft's vice president in charge of operating systems; in the other, Sun's chief technology officer
Article Abstract:
Microsoft's senior VP in charge of operating systems, Jim Allchin, is heading his company's effort to move to the data center market. That industry is currently dominated by Sun Microsystems. Sun's chief technology officer, Eric Schmidt, is leading a counterattack that will exploit the Web and Java programming technology to develop applications that run on any computer and operating system. Schmidt sees the biggest technological challenges as being those which involve inexpensive and easy-to-use products that will facilitate the move to network computing. He views intranets as an accelerator for client/server technology. Allchin sees Web-based applications as merely another form of client/server. He foresees a day when companies will be able to communicate with tens of millions of customers daily and increase their efficiencies in the process. Allchin supports the use of Windows operating systems and Pentium Pro processing, but Schmidt sees Windows NT as inferior to Unix and questions the performance of Pentium Pro-based systems.
