BellSouth Corp. has a long tradition of promoting ethical behavior among its employees. In the past, it maintained this commitment by emphasizing the company's code of conduct, which was spelled out in a booklet that listed BellSouth's position on various ethical issues. It then required all workers to sign a statement acknowledging that they had read the booklet and were willing to abide by it. In the 1990s, with the fast pace of change in the telecommunications industry, BellSouth's management decided they needed to strengthen their ethics program by going beyond the conventional code of conduct approach. In line with this, it has incorporated ethics awareness programs in all its managerial training programs, begun conducting regular ethical audits, enforced the strict implementation of its code of conduct, established an ethics committee and reviewed its employee evaluation program.

The IBM Corporate Education Network, Part 1
Article Abstract:
IBM's Corporate Education Network (CENET) offers courses to employees at major US IBM sites through satellite delivery. The company's Interactive Satellite Education Network was introduced in 1983-1984. CENET employs a satellite owned by MCI division Satellite Business Systems. A typical IBM satellite classroom can accommodate up to 12 students, and more than one classroom can be used if there are more than 12 students. Two-way student-instructor interaction is allowed via student response display monitors in the studio: a touch-sensitive screen that alerts distant instructors that students have questions. Student responses to questions are also displayed on monitor. This gives CENET a distinct advantage over the traditional classroom, making it easier to assess if students understand the material.

The IBM Corporate Education Network, part II
Article Abstract:
IBM uses satellite transmission in its Corporate Education Network (CENET) to conduct classes at various US locations. The company's key objective in developing CENET was to have a learning environment equal or superior to the traditional classroom, with a high student acceptance rate. Final test grades have been shown to be about the same in the CENET classroom as in traditional classrooms. The CENET experience has shown that the medium requires a large degree of organization and structure, with effective and efficient teaching also requisite. Improved instructional techniques, graphics, and other course aspects still require further attention.
