Why Windows 2000 just might be right for some consumers
Article Abstract:
Windows 2000 is designed as a successor to Windows NT. Microsoft is marketing it mainly to businesses. The Windows 98 operating system sold to consumers is due to be replaced with Windows Millenium Edition, or ME, due fall 2000. However, for consumers shopping for a new Windows PC in the near term, Windows 2000 might be worth considering. It is more stable than Win 98. The drawback is that the software library of device drivers in Windows 2000 isn't fully backwards compatible yet. So users wishing to retain older peripherals or install Win 2000 on an older machine may have to download and install .dll files from the Web.

Dangerous detours: Windows XP may add its links to others' sites
Article Abstract:
Microsoft's new Windows XP operating system includes Internet Explorer Smart Tags that link users to Microsoft Web services and allow Microsoft to re-edit Web sites in its favor without the knowledge and permission of users. This technology will raise questions of abusive monopoly power and value to the consumer in that Microsoft is using its software to alter the editorial objectivity of Web sites.

The new Windows: best yet, but beware; Windows XP rarely crashes, but acts as a Trojan horse to tout Microsoft services
Article Abstract:
The new Microsoft Windows XP has been released and it is seen as being the most stable and reliable operating system thus far. Most software and hardware works well with Windows XP and it has an easier and more capable user interface. New features like online photo printing and instant messaging are designed to entice consumers into using a new set of Web-based services that Microsoft is touting. Also, thereare restrictions for use and activation of the system allows Microsoft to retrieve and store a profile of each users computer and blocks use of XP on a second computer so it is next to impossible to bootleg the software. Unfourtunately, this new security device blocks one from downloading the same XP system on a second computer owned by the same consumer.
