The spoils of war: The battle for the wireless market promises to be a bonanza for consumers - and a fight to the death for companies
Article Abstract:
Wireless technology will continue to evolve, with providers offering an array of gadgets and struggling to retain customers. The formerly regulated market shifted dramatically with deregulation and $20 billion of licenses sold by the FCC in 1995. Consumers must sift through numerous wireless services, technologies and service providers to meet their needs. New digital-cellular telephone companies are fighting for survival against more established analog companies and themselves. Meanwhile, the entire wireless industry attempts to supersede the regional Bells' wired communications network. Cellular telephones rank as the most popular wireless product, with 50 million customers as of Aug 1997. Direct satellite services already are impacting TV, as they offer hundreds of channels and high-quality pictures. More than 10 million direct satellite subscribers are expected by 2000. Other satellite scenarios are discussed. Established analog companies can respond by improving their technology and, more importantly, unite and incorporate wireless technology.

Cyberslaves; new software allows consumers to send out 'agents' that make the Web more manageable - and useful
Article Abstract:
The development of the World Wide Web provides the technology behind software agents the ideal architecture in which to thrive, and software companies are rushing to market with products designed to capitalize on the innovation. Agents are small computer programs that can be made to search networks for specific types of data, and the confusing nature of the Web makes agent technology very valuable to an assortment of Internet users. Agents promise greater efficiency than Web search engines, because they can perform functions while a user is offline, and they can scan the entirety of a network or the Web, not just a search engine's collected database of information. The majority of new agent software is designed to be run from Web servers, allowing the agents to scan collected Web pages from the server.

Sellers of Unix systems adopt standard in bid to fight off Microsoft's advance
Article Abstract:
A group of the largest sellers of Unix operating systems, which includes HP, IBM, Novell and Sun Microsystems, are adopting a common desktop interface environment software standard in answer to Microsoft's advance into large-scale network computing. The interface standard will give different products the same look and feel. The vendors sell Unix operating systems designed to work in large networks, providing similar features to Microsoft's Windows NT operating system, a newcomer to the networking market. Many insiders are predicting Microsoft's Windows NT will dominate Unix in several years, but the Unix vendors say the common interface, coupled with a standard that lets programs written for one Unix system run on any other, will provide the push they need as they enter new markets.
