Lucent's board approved the merger yesterday, Ascend's board has not yet approved, but is expected to today. The deal is valued at about $19.3 billion. Lucent plans to use Ascend's data networking technology in combination with Lucent's telecommunications equipment technology to compete with data networking companies like Cisco Systems.
