The structure and function of collective constructs: implications for multilevel research and theory development
Article Abstract:
Collective constructs can be viewed in terms of the link between structure and function. Since constructs are merely abstractions used to explain apparent phenomena, they function as devices for understanding what is observable. However, since they evolve from the interaction of members of an organization, they persist through the actions of these members and can, over time, influence the process of organizational interaction. Implications that arise from this viewpoint are discussed and guidelines provided for the development of multilevel research and theory.

Multilevel theory building: benefits, barriers, and new developments
Article Abstract:
Multilevel theory provides a much-needed bridge between micro-organizational and macro-organizational theory. By modeling the impact of organizations on individuals and the corollary influence of individuals on organizations, multilevel theory creates a richer portrait of organizational behavior. It also permits scholars to combine research on individuals and groups with the work carried out in the areas of strategy, environment and organizations.
