The zero-condition: a simplifying assumption in QALY measurement and multiattribute utility
Article Abstract:
The implications of the zero-condition for measurement and multiattribute utility in quality adjusted life years (QALYs) were examined. QALY is an important and widely used outcome measure that combines quality of life and life duration in medical decision analysis. An examination of QALYs with linear and nonlinear utility for life duration showed that the measure is appropriate for health outcomes. The zero-condition results in the substantial simplification of both existing derivations of QALYs and multiplicative representations in general multiattribute utility theory. In addition, violations of the zero-condition are not possible in the measurement of health outcomes.

The optimal treatment strategy: a patient's perspective
Article Abstract:
Health care decisions regarding patient treatment programs involve many variables. These variables include the individual's attitude toward treatment versus the medical opinion of the individual's condition; the presence of one or more diseases; the availability of one or more treatments; the cost of treatment and ways of payment; the advancement of the disease(s); the probability of success; the quality of life following treatment; and related parameters. When modeled, the usual decision regarding treatment programs is to commence immediately.

Resource Allocation to Interrelated Risky Project Using a Multiattribute Utility Function
Article Abstract:
Major problems exist in project selection if the projects are interrelated; there is risk, and their utilities are affected by nonquantifiable attributes. The public sector has many examples. The objective is to maximize utility. A branch-and-bound algorithm solves the mutliplicative model.
