The fluctuation of stock prices often reflects how investors feel about how a company is managed, and companies can foster better relations with investors by concentrating on the total return to shareholders. Consultant Charlie Taylor argues that to provide maximum return to shareholders, managers should pay attention to how the sharemarket perceives the company and its competitors. Knowing sharemarket expectations can reduce the emphasis placed on short-term profit goals.

The scorecard's four dimensions are financial measures, internal business processes, customers, and learning and growth.
