Adding RAM power lets PC users bag higher performance
Article Abstract:
With the advent of more powerful software, microcomputer users can never have too much memory. The good news is adding memory does not cost much. One additional megabyte of standard RAM costs from $30 to $50, and can be bought through mail-order houses or computer shops. The single inline memory module (SIMM) is the most popular form of extra memory. It is a small circuit board with either nine memory chips for IBM-compatibles or eight for Apple Macintosh machines. SIMMS offer various capacities but the 1Mbyte and 4Mbyte versions are the most common. Their speed is measured in nanoseconds; the lower figure is the faster. Users have to refer to their manual to find out the speeds and capacities their microcomputers can take. The SIMM slots inside the machine also have to be checked to determine how accessible they are. For older IBM-compatibles, a memory manager software package might be necessary for the MS-DOS operating system to recognize the added RAM.

This new product adds disk space, makes backups easier
Article Abstract:
Iomega Corp's Zip drive and disks can help users circumvent the most common problem for hard disk users, running out of space. The Zip drive costs about $200, with accompanying disks that cost around $20, and installs in less than 20 minutes. To a PC, the Zip drive is just another floppy drive. It comes in an IBM- and Macintosh-compatible version. The drive will free up an incredible amount of hard disk space by storing less-used, larger files, such as graphics, audio and video clips, and seasonal programs including tax software. The Zip drive can also be employed to transfer large quantities of data between computers, such as a laptop and a PC. The drive is about half as fast as a hard disk drive, but speedy enough for backups and copying files. Using Norton Backup from Symantec, the Zip drive performed well as a medium backup. The Zip drive and disks are available only through mail order from discount vendors, such as Mac Connection and Micro Warehouse.

Computer users, you must remember this: a disk is just a disk
Article Abstract:
Many novice computer users confuse memory and disk storage, floppy disks with hard disks and cannot understand why floppy disks may be firm. Random access memory (RAM) is the first place that information is stored. Information stored in RAM is temporary and will be lost when a computer is shut down. In order to save information for extended periods of time, users save to disks. Hard disks are internal spinning platters coated with material much like that found in audio or video tapes. Hard disks hold large amounts of information, measured in bytes, kilobytes and megabytes. Floppy disks hold limited information and are removable and portable. Computer systems shuffle information back and forth between RAM and disk storage. Floppy disks come in two sizes: 3.5-inch and 5.25-inch, and also are available in high-density capacity.
