Sustainable growth does not seem likely for the tire and rubber industry for the last quarter of 1997, although market conditions have been favorable in the first three quarters. Several tire companies have begun to restructure their operations to cut costs and increase efficiency, and there are growth opportunities for the industry overseas. These stocks are only average or below in timeliness and investors must be selective in their commitments.

Most stocks have only average appreciation prospects through 2001, but Goodyear looks promising for the 1999-2001 period. Cooper Tire and Rubber as well as Goodyear are planning to launch aggressive streamlining efforts and production boosts.
