To be letter perfect, select a laser printer that's right for you
Article Abstract:
There are many laser printers on the market and several factors that users should consider when selecting a system. All laser printers are mechanically similar and produce a relatively high level of print quality. The price of laser printers has fallen significantly in recent years. Users should note the speed of printers, which is stated in terms of pages per minute (ppm), but users should realize that the stated speed does not take into account microprocessor speed. Users should know which page description language the printer uses. PostScript and PCL are the two major page description languages. Buyers should evaluate printer connectivity to various computing platforms, as well as the networking protocol. Users should note print quality, with 300 dots per inch (dpi) being the lowest common standard. Users should also note printer operating costs, such as replacement of toner and the life cycle of printer components.

Two new machines offer many functions, but not all work well
Article Abstract:
The Xerox WorkCentre 480cx ($499) and the Compaq A900 ($349, after a $50 rebate) both offer color printing capability that is fast and of good quality. The WorkCentre installed without problems, and functioned properly. Drawbacks are no color copying and a complicated control panel. The A900 does have color copying. It also has a unique interface called a Control Form, a cover sheet that the user fills out manually, which then tells the machine what operations to perform on the succeeding documents (fax, scan, etc.). However, the A900 failed to attach to an IBM laptop and a Dell desktop. It worked fine after Compaq supplied a laptop, a cable, and updated software. Compaq has subsequently delayed the A900's launch to correct the software problems.
