Tobacco industry
Article Abstract:
The costs of anti-tobacco litigation and legislation combined with a decline in consumption in key overseas and US markets have led to a downward trend in tobacco stocks in 1999. Poor economic conditions in Latin America and Eastern Europe and higher prices have also led to a drop in demand for tobacco products, despite a healthy US economy. These stocks are not recommended for conservative investors due to litigation losses and other factors.

Tobacco industry
Article Abstract:
The tobacco industry continues to do well in the year 2001, with wider margins, low P/E ratios, and good dividends. Tobacco litigation continues, however, in the US and the global market for tobacco seems to be shrinking. These stocks are timely for 2001 and 2002, but probably not for the next three to five years.
