Towards single status?
Article Abstract:
Employers have traditionally divided their employees into staff and workers, the former having higher status and better conditions of employment than the latter. The distinction between the two is beginning to evaporate, however, as some employers try to integrate the two groups into one. While the development of single-status policies suggest that all major terms and conditions will be common to all employees, some differences may still exist, but those that do are justified by claiming they are related to the needs of the job rather than being a reflection of status. The trend toward this single status in the workplace in Britain since the mid-1960s is described.

Middle management work
Article Abstract:
Fifty-two British middle managers from 16 different businesses were interviewed or observed to delineate the role middle management plays in the organization and improve understanding of management work. Work was classified as either technical, administrative, or managerial. Three features of work were identified that seemed stronger for middle managers than for others were: networking, coping with uncertainty, and coordinating with other departments. A middle management 'trap' was identified in which the individual's career aspirations and concerns for the future have a negative effect on the middle management work itself.
