Travel agent or travel site? It depends on the trip
Article Abstract:
In 1998, online sales of travel related services totaled about $2.23 bil, nearly 1.7% of the amount spent overall by Americans booking business or leisure trips themselves. By 2002, analysts forecast that the number of these bookings will grow to 7.9% of the total market, an increase to $12.6 bil. Presently, the Web offers many resources for travel research and price comparison. Current user interfaces for online transactions work well for point to point trips. More complicated itineraries are still best handled via a sales person. Only about 30 percent of users visiting a given site end up paying for a reservation there.

Turning coupon users from clippers into clickers
Article Abstract:
Marketers are now using the Internet to gain access to consumers that use coupons. Businesses from storage lockers to supermarkets are going online to offer discount coupons on products services. Consumers can either print the coupons from their home computers or use them as "Web Bucks" for products purchased online. However, searches for coupons on the Internet can be cumbersome and grocery stores have had some reservations about accepting coupons that are printed out on home PCs.

Talk and point: interactive map is learning to show the way
Article Abstract:
Researchers at the University of Pennsylvania are developing an interactive map that responds to speech and gesture. The system uses a cordless microphone, a video camera, and a map of the campus on a touch sensitive screen. The engineers have developed speech and image processing software that helps users pinpoint their location and their destination. The challenge was programming the machine to recognize meaningful gestures in this context.
