Turn of the Cycle

Article Abstract:

Casualty insurance time for a cyclical upturn is right, but conditions are not. A chart provided with the article shows that in spite of record underwriting losses, surplus was still up. This is because of a continued increase in investment income and a rise in the stock market. Conditions are therefore not yet right for a turnaround. Another unusual characteristic of this cycle is the continued relative profitability of private passenger auto insurance lines. The significant underwriting deterioration that has centered thus far in commercial insurance lines has tended to skew underwriting losses toward companies with heavy commercial exposures. It has left personal insurance companies relatively profitable. Earnings in most of the stocks of these companies will probably worsen, so the stocks should be bought at this time.
