Two L.A. officers sentenced in King beating
Article Abstract:
Powell and Koon were sentenced Aug 4, 1993, to two and half years in prison for their roles in the beating of motorist King. Judge John G. Davies says he gave lenient sentences because King provoked the attack. The two officers had been previously found innocent in another trial on related charges.

Los Angeles, CA, police officer Laurence M. Powell was ordered retried for his role in the beating of Rodney King. The location of the new trial will be decided on May 22, 1992. Fifty-eight people were killed in the riot following the original verdicts and 623 structures were set on fire.

Police officer Powell was convicted of violating the constitutional rights of Rodney King on Apr 17, 1993, and Sergeant Koon was found guilty of allowing the violation to occur. The Los Angeles, CA, police were prepared for riots, which did not occur.
