Dairy assails bill to alter marketing

A conflict has emerged between the California Milk Advisory Board and Atwater-based Gallo Cattle Co., one of California's largest cheese producers over proposed legislation. The legislation, which is sponsored by the Modesto-based Western United Dairymen, would make changes in the state-sanctioned annual $18.5 million advertising and marketing campaign for cheese, including the promotion of specific brands of of cheese. Gallo executives have said that the changes amount to a new form of corporate welfare.

Mexican sugar producer seeks to renegotiate terms after failing to meet $30 million note
Article Abstract:
Consorcio Azucarero Escorpion (CAZE) was unable to fulfill its obligations for a Euronote worth $30 million. As a result, the company is renegotiating the terms of the note with bondholders. The Euronote was due in the middle of September 1998. CAZE is the largest producer of sugar in Mexico and is a subsidiary of Grupo Escorpion. CAZE did not have sufficient funds to meet its obligations.
