U.S., China reach accord on 'pirated' goods
Article Abstract:
China and the US signed an agreement on Feb. 26, 1995 that would stop the illegal production of goods protected by international copyright in China. This move was made after 11 days of intense negotiations and on the day that the US was poised to impose a retaliatory 100% tariff on Chinese exports.

US trade officials have accused China of not trying hard enough to stop the pirating of films, sound recordings and software, and both countries discussed possible trade sanctions against one another on May 15, 1996. Copyright violations have been on the rise in China recently.

Citizens urged to boycott pirated goods

China hopes to avoid a 100% increase in tariffs on items made in China and exported to the United States by telling the country's residents not to purchase pirated goods. US manufacturers encouraged the US to take some action to protect their rights from illegal copies.
