The computer lacks a very long history; Paul Pierce protects it; he has a big warehouse full of old clunkers and dreams of establishing a museum
Article Abstract:
Paul R. Pierce, an Intel engineer, owns one of the largest private collections of computers, comprising about 75 tons of obsolete PCs minicomputers and mainframes. Pierce's collection is so large, he had to pay more than $100,000 to purchase a 20,000-square-foot building to warehouse it. Computer collecting is rapidly becoming a popular hobby. Tom Carlson, curator of the Obsolete Computer Museum, Williamsburg, VA, cites the reach of the Internet as a reason. In Sep 1998, several hundred collectors converged at the annual Vintage Computer Festival, Santa Clara, CA, where rare models, such as an Apple I circuit board, were selling for as much as $30,000. Like many collectors, Pierce hopes someday to open his collection to the public.

U.S. retail sales of video games up 32% for year
Article Abstract:
The two top video-game-console makers, Sony and Nintendo, both Japanese companies, have driven the industry to a 32% increase in retail sales in the U.S. Part of the reason is the expansion of the age group interested in playing games. And all ages want new titles to play. This holiday season could break another record. Market research firm, NPD Group, expects sales to get up to $6.3 billion in 1998 and set another record in 1999 before leveling off.
