US to release patent data on World Wide Web site
Article Abstract:
The Clinton Administration will announce on 25 June, 1998, the planthat will make the full database of the nation's patents since 1976 and all trademark texts and images since the late 1800's on the World Wide Web freely available in the beginning of August, 1998. The database will be the largest government database on the Internet with information on more than two million patents. The decision, part of Vice President Al Gore's "reinventing government" program, was prompted by the debate between public advocates who wished the information to be made readily available, an companies who wished to purchase the information from the government and sell it.

Restoration Hardware, a homegoods chain specializing in high-end furniture, lighting and gadgets has seen its stock price rise 38% to $26.25 per share in one day after going public June 19, 1998 at $19 per share. The company has appeal for both male and female shoppers and plans to add 25 stores annually over the next two years to its current total of 47 stores. On the negative side, the company is trading at around 45 times its forward earnings, typically is only profitable in the fourth quarter of the year, and analysts have expressed concerned that the company could be vulnerable if an economic downturn cuts consumer spending.

A drug store rebellion against managed care
Article Abstract:
Newton-Timmermann Pharmacy is just one example of an independent pharmacy that can't break even on the reimbursements that managed-care drug plans allow. The customer service-oriented neighborhood drug store located at Lexington and 62nd Street in Manhattan no longer accepts the cards. Consequently, the store has lost about 250 customers who have to go elsewhere. New York state lost 612 independent pharmacies from 1992 to 1997 while gaining 513 chain drugstores during the same period.
