Medtronic agrees to buy upstart AVE for $3.7 billion in a stock transaction

Electrical devices have been the forte of Medtronic, devices such as cardiac pacemakers and defibrillators. Now the company wants to move ahead in the area of stents by acquiring Arterial Vascular Engineering Inc. of Santa Rosa, California. In a stock deal worth $3.7 billion, Medtronic joins competition like Guidant and Boston Scientific. A high- and fast-growth area, AVE was started up in 1991 by a few medical-device engineers.

Rite Aid faces profit challenge with PCS Health

PCS Health Systems, a prescription drug management company, provided financial difficulties to its previous owner Eli Lilly and is now being evaluated by new owner Rite Aid. There is a good synchronicity between the services offered by PCS and the prescriptions written at Rite Aid drugstores. PCS is seen as an important player in containing drug prices in the future as it can negotiate tough deals with drug makers.
