Using computers to correct grammar
Article Abstract:
Three PC text editors, Correct Grammar, Grammatik IV, and RightWriter were tested as to their utility. Correct Grammar's printed output contains suggestions in brackets and offered 12 different editorial comments on a test article. Grammatik IV's printed output is not as readable as Correct Grammar, but offered 18 suggestions for corrections. RightWriter produced printed output that is easier to read than the other two programs and made 21 succinct and effective suggestions for corrections. The three programs have difficulty in detecting the subtleties of technical writing but are helpful to those people who want to improve as technical writers. RightWriter is the best program of the three, though Grammatik IV is slightly easier to use.

How important is academic research?
Article Abstract:
College accounting faculty members are under growing pressure to publish scholarly research. This emphasis on published research has led to termination of some outstanding instructors and tenure for some prolific publishers who have a 'deadening' effect in the classroom. Scholarly research is emphasized because: the research benefits accounting practice; personal gains such as tenure and promotions accrue to the researcher; stimulus is provided to other researchers; academic institutions' reputations are enhanced; and faculty members serve as examples to doctoral students. It is suggested, however, that accounting practice would benefit more from applied rather than academic research.

The Accounting Library
Article Abstract:
Solutions Inc's Accounting Library software program helps to identify and select personal computer (PC)-based accounting programs. It allows users to examine a database of single and multiuser products operating under Macintosh, UNIX, and DOS. The program includes a computerized questionnaire with over 900 questions that are answered by assigning a numerical rating of between 0 and 9. After applicable questions are answered, the Accounting Library matches the answers with the capabilities of all PC-based systems in its database, and prints a list of appropriate systems. The program is an excellent investment and sells for $479, while six months of updates are provided free of charge.
