Using founder status, age of firm, and company growth rate as the basis for distinguishing entrepreneurs from managers of smaller businesses
Article Abstract:
Various definitions on the identification of entrepreneurs compared to nonentrepreneurs were studied using founder status, company age, and company growth of small businesses. Questionnaires were sent to 730 CEOs who were members of the Smaller Business Assn. of New England which elicited a 33% response rate. It was suggested that a definition of entrepreneurship should include previous experience, risk-taking, Type A behavior and a growth orientation. Definitions which resulted in clearer distinctions were those based on founders, younger companies and mixtures of founders and younger companies.
