Video dialtone: its potential for social change
Article Abstract:
Video dialtone (VDT) technology promises to revolutionize society as it brings greater and more standardized information in all its forms, namely, sound, still and moving images, data and text. VDT enables telephone and cable TV operators to use a combination of telephone wires, TV coaxial cables and fiber optics as well as a network of analog and digital signals to transmit this information. With information a major determinant of the way people relate to one another and with the world around them, VDT has enormous potential to change people's knowledge of the world around them and their way of relating to each other.

Video dialtone network architecture
Article Abstract:
The four main video dialtone network architectures are asymmetrical digital subscriber line (ADSL), hybrid fiber/coaxial (HFC), fiber-to-the-curb (FTTC) and dial-up access via leased digital lines. Each of these architectures have their own particular strengths and weaknesses. Among the factors to be considered are the anticipated market penetration rate, the capital available for network installation, the network provider's existing facilities and infrastructure and the projected demand for video dialtone services.

Tough year as cable operators wait it out
Article Abstract:
The viability of pay TV is still questionable, and the success of pay TV and interactive services may depend on how quickly broadband cable technology is introduced and accepted. Devices like cable modems increase the flow of programs and data, but are limited by older network equipment still in use. Much of Australia has two-way cable for television, but many companies are reluctant to get into an uncertain market.
