Vitamin cheats cough up millions
Article Abstract:
The United States Justice Department has imposed huge fines on the world's largest vitamin manufacturers for rigging prices and creating an unbalanced market share. In May 1999, F. Hoffmann-La Roche and Company Ltd. of Switzerland and BASF AG of Germany were fined $500 million and $225 million, respectively. France's Rhone-Poulenc S.A. will avoid fines because it provided evidence against Roche and BASF. Together, the three control around 75% of the world vitamin market share.
