Warding Off the Big Chill: Ethical Investing for Profit
Article Abstract:
A new breed of money funds is out to show that the socially responsible approach to investing is viable. These new investment vehicles want to prove that 'clean' investments can earn money rate returns. Even the publishing world is getting in the social investment scene with publications about it. Many churches, foundations, and universities are also seeking investments that agree with their principles. The results of these new funds are mixed. Many pension funds are interested in ethical investment vehicles. Public retirement funds are increasingly demanding ways to make their assets work for social goals.

Exposed Shelters
Article Abstract:
Legistation is now being considered that would eliminate many tax saving devices investors currently use. Manipulations with stocks and dividends are under close IRS scrutiny now. The lawmakers want to strip profits from individuals who short stock in anticipation of dividends. One provision of the new tax bill being formed would be retroactive, to October 31, 1983. This would eliminate 'option rolls,' a method used to defer taxes indefinitely. Many tax loopholes are anticipated to be closed by this new legislation although cynics believe new loopholes will be discovered as needed.

Tax Shelters: Investing with Uncle Sam in Mind
Article Abstract:
A tax shelter is a means of deferring taxes, not escaping them. Tax shelters are often risky. The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) watches investors in tax shelters closely through their specialized auditing program just for tax shelters. The four main categories of tax shelters are: oil and gas, real estate, agribusiness, and equipment leasing. The Keogh and Individual Retirement Account plans are really deferred annuities, not tax shelters. An investor must do thorough research on a tax shelter before deciding to invest in it.
