What do managers do? A critical review of the evidence
Article Abstract:
An analysis of management research indicates that it is still quite legitimate to pose the question: what do managers do? The research has hitherto displayed three primary shortcomings: first, there is no common held system of categorization as to management rules or tasks; second, there is no standard empirical model of 'good' management, against which other practices can be compared; and third, there is no firm distinction between managerial and other behavior. Research topics suggested by these observations are provided.

A comparative analysis of research and development managerial jobs across two sectors
Article Abstract:
The management of research and development activities in both the public and private sectors is compared to the management of other organizational areas. A survey of 448 managers indicates that research and development managers view their roles in much the same manner as other managers. In addition, the research indicates that managerial roles are assigned similar levels of importance by managers in both private industry and governmental work.

Firing Blanks? An Analysis of Discursive Struggle in HRM
Article Abstract:
Discourse analysis of human resource management research is presented, focusing on the arguments of Karen Legge and David Guest. The article illustrates how modernist/positivist discursive texts have been able to successfully construct human resource management identity and have situated it in the broader scope of the employment relationship.
