What do they do on-line?
Article Abstract:
Many Internet users are amazed when they realize how much time they actually spend online. A myriad of information exists on the Web and it is changing the way people work as well as play. Users are researching information on the Web, instead of visiting the local library. They are shopping electronically, instead of thumbing through catalogs or strolling through shopping centers. Many users are employing the Web to keep up on the latest news and business information, instead of watching television or reading the newspaper. Online entertainment includes computer games as well as movie and music reviews and chat lines. Unlike US television, the Web reflects the diverse interests of the population and caters to topics that lack universal appeal. E-mail continues to be the leading online activity, but it is followed closely by research, news and information, entertainment and education.

MCI's Internet assets may go to Cable & Wireless
Article Abstract:
MCI is about to sell its Internet business to Cable & Wireless of Britain for between $600 million and $700 million in cash, according to insiders in late May 1998. The move would aim to resolve European objections to the $37 billion MCI-WorldCom merger, as regulators have ruled the combination would hold more than 50% of the Internet's backbone traffic. A condition for approval, according to government officials, requires one of the companies to sell its Internet business rather than divesting part of its Internet-related assets. Some are questioning the possible MCI sale in terms of its specifics and sufficiency. Letters from rival GTE to the Justice Department cited investment bankers who appraised MCI's Internet business at more than $4 billion. IXC Communications and Williams have reached the short list of potential MCI suitors, one source said.
