Who Has the Hot Hand?
Article Abstract:
An evaluation of the performance of the leading investment advisors in the first half of 1983 is presented. The best- performing newsletter in early 1983 has been 'The Prudent Speculator', a little-known stock market newsletter published by Al Frank. The evaluation was prepared by the Hulbert Financial Digest, probably the most powerful stock-market newsletter rating service. Hulbert points out that some of the best-performing investment advisors are particularly risky and volatile. A list of Hulbert's top investment newsletters and their addresses is included.

Mutual Funds: Downhill from the Peak
Article Abstract:
Mutual funds performed poorly in the third and fourth quarters of 1983. Progressive growth funds performed well in the first half of 1983, but lost appreciably in the last half of 1983. Alliance Technology and Delta Trends are two speculative funds who lost net assets in the third and fourth quarters of 1983. Even with second half losses the losers were up for the year as a whole. A list citing the fourth quarter's winners and losers is included. International funds lead all other types of mutual funds in the final quarter of 1983.

Against All Odds: Beating the Averages
Article Abstract:
Mutual funds move in groups. Interviews with the managers of especially good performers indicate that their success was due usually to a takeover candidate in their group. Funds that slipped behind all had no energy stocks. Some exceptionally poor performers were seen in growth and income stock mutual funds. Growth and income funds usually hold their values better than the three funds that did the worst.
