Windows 98 offers users some useful, but not vital, features
Article Abstract:
Microsoft's Windows 98 OS represents a competent upgrade from its Windows 95 predecessor but does not revolutionize computer use. Its performance is not consistent with critics's fears of a built-in Internet Explorer 4.0 Web browser that will dominate the Internet, or Microsoft's recent marketing push as a product critical to the US economy amid antitrust controversy. Windows 98 repairs numerous Windows 95 flaws and includes some new helpful features, but it is not necessary for all Windows 95 users, especially those who already use Internet Explorer 4.0. The built-in Internet Explorer 4.0 rewards Windows 98 with functions like viewing files on the hard disk and displaying the help screens. Users can download Netscape's Navigator software from the Netscape Web site without difficulty. Windows 98 also demonstrates increased compatibility with add-on hardware that uses USB connectors, such as a Logitech USB scanner, but newer Windows 95 machines keep pace. Windows 98 costs $90 to upgrade from Windows 95.

For PC owners, CD offshoot is music to the eyes
Article Abstract:
Microcomputer users looking for sufficient storage for large amounts of data should find read-only-memory compact disks (CD-ROM) useful now that the disks have become less expensive and more available to the mass market. A typical CD-ROM disk can store more than 600Mbytes of data, which is the equivalent of the information found in an entire encyclopedia. Leading CD-ROM drives bundled with software can be bought at $600 or less. Some name-brand products include Microsoft Corp's Microsoft Bookshelf, a data base which includes a number of popular reference works, and Sony Corp's Laser Library. One should exercise caution in the selection of multimedia CD-ROMs, however, since multimedia technology is still in its beginning stages and not many compatible software programs are being marketed. The catalog from CD-ROM vendor Electronics Publishing is a good place to consult for more CD-ROM information.

Kaplan and Princeton offer aid with attitude to the SAT-bound
Article Abstract:
Kaplan Educational Centers and Princeton Review offer software packages that help students prepare to take the SAT college entrance exam, or its competitor, the ACT. Kaplan's product, called 'Higher Score on the SAT & ACT,' is published by Knowledge Adventure, and Princeton Review's, called 'Inside the SAT & ACT,' by The Learning Co. Both products cost less than $30, and both come in slightly more expensive 'deluxe' editions, which add databases on colleges and financial aid. Both products run on Windows and Macintosh computers, and both offer money-back guarantees that a student's scores will rise. Both are highly recommended.
