Yahoo! holds talks on acquiring Broadcast.com, boosting shares
Article Abstract:
Yahoo! Inc. is in negotiations to acquire Broadcast.com Inc., an Internet broadcaster. Broadcast.com transmits radio programs, sporting events and corporate meetings over the Internet, and is also looking into broadcasting motion pictures directly from a Hollywood studio. Yahoo, an Internet portal and search service, is looking to acquire other online businesses as a number of Internet, cable-television and telecommunications firms look to offer high-speed interactive services, which include audio, video and multimedia data, to the public. However, Yahoo may be concerned about the profitability of Broadcast.com, as the company has yet to make a profit, losing $14.9 million in 1998. Also, Yahoo has yet to complete its acquisition of GeoCities Inc., a community of Internet sites that it agreed to buy this year.

Yahoo!'s buying spree may not be over; after broadcast.com deal, executive says industry is in for consolidation
Article Abstract:
Yahoo! Inc. CEO Tim Koogle confirms that the company is looking for additional companies to acquire in the near future. Industry analysts say that Yahoo! lacks large distribution accords with Internet-access providers, control of certain types of Internet software, and an alliance with a huge media firm. So far, Yahoo! has instead made many smaller marketing and distribution deals. However, the company is currently in discussion with large firms, including Microsoft Corp., about potential deals. In separate but related news, shares of RealNetworks Inc. shot up on speculation that it may be a target of the next huge Internet acquisition play in the industry.
