Article Abstract:
The introduction of portable computers, cellular telephones and other hand-held data devices has blurred the distinction between the office and the outside world and between work and leisure time, leading to new social problems as technology intrudes into non-traditional locations. Many people use portable computers on airplanes, sometimes annoying their fellow passengers with loud beeps or monopolizing restrooms equipped with power outlets for recharging. Some people continue to work even when on vacation, and many complain that the facilities are not available to accommodate the new technologies. Most airports, airlines and hotels are not equipped for data communications, and managers are reluctant to spend money on retrofitting. In-flight telephones have become commonplace but continue to suffer from sound problems. Hyatt Hotels has installed dataport telephones in 95 percent of its US rooms.

Zagat's to offer 3 travel guides on floppy disk
Article Abstract:
Zagat Survey's and Axxis Software Inc's $100-per-city CityGuide is a computerized version of Zagat's tourist guides that makes good use of the trend of portable computers, but is expensive and not always accurate. The database is efficient and powerful. Users can find data meeting very specific criteria, and a mapping program shows users how to get from place to place by displaying a map with an image of a car moving through the streets. The database only works on Microsoft Windows, but the company expects to produce a CD-ROM version in late 1992. However, the program is expensive and at least one inaccuracy has been found in its information. By the end of 1992, the company hopes to have all 35 of its covered cities available in CityGuide. Other companies, such as Advance Publications Inc and Maxwell Communication Corp, are creating similar products.
