The number of UK 4x4 vehicle registrations rose 39.5% from 58,563 in 1993 to 81,710 in 1997. Land Rover dominated the market in 1997 with 27% of total registrations. Toyota accounted for 14% of total registrations. Forecasters predict the 4x4 vehicle market will increase by 49.3% in 2001, up to 122,000 registrations, due mainly to the launch of Land Rover's new Freelander model. 4x4 vehicles range in price from 10,750 pounds sterling to 49,325 pounds sterling.

People carriers

Total passenger vehicle registrations rose by 22.1% between 1993 to 1997, however, registrations of people carriers alone rose 229% over the same period. People carriers currently make up 2% of the total passenger vehicle industry. Ford dominates the market, although its market share was eroded in 1997 by Seat, Chrysler and Volkswagen.
