A NEW TIMETABLE
Article Abstract:

Many Swiss and Japanese firms plan to enter the Indian market as the demand for watches in India is estimated to be around 40 million. This is expected to affect Titan India Limited (TIL), a watch producer having presence in the middle and upper segments, as these firms are aiming at the urban upper market. Currently, Hindustan Machine Tools (HMT) leads the market with a share of 38 percent followed by TIL with 32 percent and Timex with 21 percent. The RP Goenka group has signed a marketing pact with SMH for marketing its products in India. The group plans to launch some of SMH's leading brands like Omega, Rado, Longiness, Tissot, Certina and Balamain. Citizen Watch Co Ltd of Japan is establishing a Rs10-crore wrist watch assembly unit near Chennai, for selling assembled watches in India by the end of 1998. (ag)
