A PIG OF A YEAR
Article Abstract:
The pig iron industry in India is facing severe crisis in the current year resulting in closing down of many small blast furnaces. Of the total installed capacity of 3.2 million tonnes per annum (MTPA), nearly 1.5 MTPA capacity has been closed down in 1997. For a mini-blast furnace the cost of production works out to Rs5,700 per tonne whereas the market price is Rs5,000 per tonne. Rashtriya Ispat Nigam, the country's largest pig iron producer, has stopped production and exports as ruling prices are uneconomical. Pig iron prices were ruling at Rs9,300 per tonne in 1996. In the first six months of 1998-99, the pig iron exports dropped to 1.94 lakh tonnes as against 3.23 lakh tonnes in the corresponding perod of 1997-98. (gs)
