DESTINATION INDIA IS STILL FAR AWAY, SAYS STUDY
Article Abstract:
A study by Mahajan & Aibara indicates that India is not a popular destination for tourists. India attracts only 2.2 million or 0.4 percent of the world's 617 million tourists. This is attributed to lack of co-ordination between the government and the industry. The resource allocation for tourism is inadequate. India's tourism budget is $27.5 million compared to $51 million in Thailand and Singapore, and $88 million in Australia. Domestic tourism generated revenues of Rs20,000 crore in 197-98. The government earned foreign exchange of 13,000 crore from overseas tourists. The growth of tourism industry has been affected by lack of infrastructural facilities including proper air, road, rail facilities and additional hotel rooms. (pc)

The company's exports fell by 44 percent to 954 units in August 1998 against 1728 units in August 1997. The company's decline in exports is attributed to the devaluation of Asian currencies.
