A backbreaking job
Article Abstract:
Russian agricultural policy has to tackle problms created by collectivization in the Societ era, and this will take decades. Some progress is being made, however. Collective farms tend not to attempt financial and marketing management, and their productivity is low. Private farms are making progress, but larger farms tend to need help to prosper. Smaller farms are more productive and have been created from pooling family allotments. Such farms account for 50% of meat production in Russia, despite accounting for under 5% of farmland.

Article Abstract:
United Kingdom farmers have been affected by the strength of pound sterling, which has hit exports, and by a drop in the value of the Russian ruble, which has cut imports to that country. Bacon and pork exports to East Asia have dropped, which has hit pig farmers. Farmers are leaving the business or diversifying, and land is being used for holiday homes and golf ranges. Some farmers live in areas too remote to attract tourists, and have no option but to leave the business.
