Farewell, Cuba
Article Abstract:
A number of Cubans have sought to enter the US illegally, though emigration from Cuba has dropped since the US and Cuba reached agreement on the issue. Cubans gain asylum if they reach the US, and are returned to Cuba if they are found in the sea. Cubans face lack of work and many depend on remittances from relatives in the US. The US has imposed an embargo on Cuba which is one of the main sources of Cuba's economic problems. Cuban economic policy also tends to discourage initiative, though the government is seeking to improve efficiency of government enterprises.
