Western oil companies are hopeful that the United Nations will lift economic sanctions on Iraq, at least temporarily, so they can take advantage of Iraq's huge undeveloped oil reserves. There are concerns though that the lifting of sanctions could destabilize the world's oil market.

Some geologists, including the members of the Oil Depletion Analysis Centre, believe that the world will soon start to run out of oil. They believe that the global peak in oil output will occur in the next 10 years, but mainstream thinking says the peak is still decades away.
