A bottomless pit?

The reunification of Germany brought about an effort to transform the eastern German economy to a level similar to that of the west. However, some six years after the reunification, the effort has proven to be unsuccessful. The various economic problems are discussed.

German reunification officially took place six years ago, but those in the eastern and western parts of the country had lived apart for 40 years prior to that time, and under very different political and economic systems. Deep divisions remain in the minds of many.

Germany has been officially unified for six years, but the unity is not yet a reality. Citizens on both sides of what was formerly the border between East and West Germany are discouraged, and the continued economic inequality and disputes aggravate the problem.
