A budget for reform
Article Abstract:
The European Commission has introduced a huge package plan, called Agenda 2000, for a seven-year financial term ending in 2006. The proposal caps spending at 1.27% of the Union's GDP, even if six new members arrive by 2002. Agenda 2000, which the commission presented to the European Parliament on July 16, 1997, also includes proposals for radical changes to the common agricultural policy and to the regional and social funds. The commission has emphasized the need for such reforms, irrespective of enlargement.

EMU's working hypothesis: what effect will a single European currency have on unemployment?
Article Abstract:
Some economic analysts believe the introduction of a single currency in Europe will push the region's unemployment higher than it already is. This argument is rebutted by analysis that shows the factors that contribute to the unemployment are common to Europe, not individual countries.
