Ready or not, here comes EMU
Article Abstract:
The European Monetary Union is expected to be introduced on Jan 1, 1999, as agreed by the European Union in the early 1990s. The future of the EMU has been suspect, but the Sep 1997 agreement that participating parties will be announced in May 1998 shows that the single-currency movement is progressing as planned. Despite the advanced warning, however, companies and governments still are not prepared for the arrival of the EMU.

The high road: European interest rates
Article Abstract:
The single currency plans of the European Union have brought long-term bond yields of all participating countries in line with those of Germany's, but short-term rates continue to differ widely. For example, Germany's three-month interest rates are 3.3%, while those of Italy are 6.8%.
