Residents of Mexico City, Mexico want to be able to vote for their own leaders. Currently the mayor and other officials are all selected by the president, since Mexico City is a federal district. The ruling Institutional Revolutionary Party is opposed to any power sharing.

Business improvement districts that allow private landlords to provide municipal services can be of benefit to cities with great debt. The Grand Central Partnership BID in New York City has helped to decrease crime and improve the appearance of Grand Central Station.
