A clear line from Brazil

The auction of the assets of Brazilian state telecommunications company Telebras attracted more interest than had been anticipated. Telefonica of Spain purchased the fixed-line company in Sao Paulo, Brazil, along with a mobile phone concern in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Telecom Italia and a Brazilian group acquired two local telephone operators, while MCI purchased Embratel, operator of long-distance services. The sale raised 22 billion reais, 64% more than the minimum the government had fixed.
