A cliff-face house on Elba
Article Abstract:
Casa Scott on Elba was designed and built by the owner, engineer Alan Scott, together with Italian engineer Leopoldo Rosi. This house, built into the cliff face 25 meters above the sea in 1960, incorporates advanced solutions to environmental conditions. The concrete building comprises a series of platforms supported on reinforced concrete beams cantilevered out from the cliff face. The beams are additionally supported by slim vertical columns. The house, which is naturally ventilated, faces south-west to receive the winter sun, and incorporates two separate lift shafts.

Roman and Regency on the river
Article Abstract:
A steel Metsec Metframe was used for Adrian James's Thamesside house in Oxford, England. The structure is entirely steel apart from the all-timber ground floor, with upper floors being chipboard on 200 mm-deep steel joists. The curved roof was not much more expensive than an ordinary pitched roof. The only steel that can be seen on the outside of the house is the framing to the copper-roofed orangery and a steel lined recess around the tops of the side walls where they wrap around the end elevations to form large buttresses.

Safe as houses
Article Abstract:
Housing market trends show house buyers as being more discriminating when purchasing property. Customers are looking for good quality housing, high standards of insulation which affect the noise pollution, both inside and from outside, and energy efficiency of the property. Noise tests, comparing concrete with timber flooring, showed that the precast concrete was doubly efficient at reducing noise.
