A curved cable-stayed crossing, like ships in the harbour, offers motorists changing views of the area
Article Abstract:
The bridge scheme for a double cable-stayed crossing for Poole was submitted by Harris & Kjisik, architects, of Finland. The starting point for the design was the blueprint of the landscape, with the bridge curving vertically and horzontally. The 120m high steel pylons and all exposed steel surfaces were recommended for treatment with non-corrosive paints developed recently for the space programme. The judges for the bridge competition felt that the curved deck appeared forced and the design was somewhat overscaled for the site.

A design using an enclosed space frame took a subtle approach to this aesthetically and environmentally sensitive site
Article Abstract:
The Maunsell/Percy Thomas Partnership design for the Poole bridge competition featured the SPACES Deck System, developed by Maunsell. The gentle arch of the bridge was aimed to have subtle impact on the landscape and tapered tubular steel legs enclosed in a fibre-reinforced membrane, support the structure. The judges welcomed the simplicity but felt concern for the cost and efficiency of the space frame over a long span.
