A global disaster
Article Abstract:
AIDS is a more serious problem in developing countries than in rich countries, both in terms of life expectancy for people with AIDS, and because the disease is spreading. Southern and east Africa have been worst affected, but the disease is also spreading through Asia. There are differing opinions on the economic impact of the disease on developing countries. Some researchers argue that there are too many workers already so it will have little impact. Others argue that the most productive are hit, and that resources used in caring for the sick affect society as a whole. Senegal is an example of a poorer country that effectively used prevention, while Uganda has been effective in comabting the spread of AIDS.

Corporate hospitality
Article Abstract:
Companies have often provided health care for employees in developing economies. This brings a number of benefits, such as improvements in productivity and a reduction in absenteeism. Placer Dome is providing health care to non-employees as well in a project in Papua New Guinea. Meanwhile, South Africa's Eskom is investing in an AIDS eduation program, and is cooperating with the government to cut infection levels among prostitutes who work near the company's power plants. Companies also gain from goodwill engendered by these projects. The World Health Organization has improved relations with companies, though tensions still exist between coimpanies and charities.
