The money factor
Article Abstract:
A meeting between South and North Korea, the US and China has been held in Geneva, Switzerland, and has had partial success. North Korea tends to take more notice of issues involving money, and Koreans in Japan have supplied funds to North Korea which could amount to $2 billion annually. North Korea is seeking funds from the US in exchange for ending exports of missiles, and for permitting inspections of nuclear facilities. Counterfeiting of US dollars and drug trafficking are also ways for North Koreans to make money.

Another Korean crisis?
Article Abstract:
There are confusing signals from N Korea where there has apparently been some opening up to the outside world, yet there are plans to blast a new missile. A dispute in the Yellow Sea, and the detention of a tourist from S Korea in N Korea are also cause for concern. N Korea has learnt that it can gain benefits by being difficult, and it has been rewarded in the past. N Korea could miscalculate with this strategy, and the patience of those that deal with N Korea may not last forever.

When North Korea goes critical
Article Abstract:
The combination of a collapsing economy, virtual diplomatic isolation, and a belligerent leadership makes North Korea a potential danger. Proposed talks between the two Koreas, China, and the US would be a first step toward defusing the situation, but a regional collective security arrangement is needed.
