A global war against bribery
Article Abstract:
International measures to tackle bribery have become possible because ordinary people who are concerned about the problem have the support of businessmen, law makers and aid donors who have joined together. A number of economies have been hit by crises that are related to corruption. Corruption is seen as a problem that affects economies, and which leads to popular demonstrations against it. Corruption once appeared less of a problem for economic development, but this view has changed. The problem is not easy to solve, but there are hopeful signs that progress is being made.

Stop the rot
Article Abstract:
Corruption brings high costs and the International Monetary Fund and World Bank both aim to tackle the problem. An international convention coming into force in Feb 1999 makes it a crime to bribe foreign officials. Corruption is widespread and difficult to define, and has become linked to capitalism in some countries such as Russia. Ordinary people have to tackle the problem if it is to be defeated. This is occurring in Rajasthan, India, where public hearings are held on village finances.
