A gypsy awakening
Article Abstract:
Many gypsies have fled Kosovo, Yugoslavia, and some have been killed. Central and eastern Europe account for some 75% of European gypsies, and they tend to be associated with crime and welfare. They face police harassment, and have been ill treated in the past. There is a campaign to promote literacy among gypsy children and adults and for discrimination and other crimes against gypsies to be recognised. They were Holocaust victims who have tended to be ignored, and are seeking compensation. Some countries such as the Czech Republic, are starting to treat gypsies better due to the desire of these countries to join the European Union.
